The British Theatre Academy’s dynamic My Son Pinocchio Jr. re-frames the classic Italian fable – bringing new life, slick vocals and heaps of energy to this colourful and heart wrenching production.

My Son Pinocchio Jr. offers a new insight into the Italian fable, re-framing the action from the perspective of Pinocchio’s father Gepetto as he comes to terms with the role of a parent. The narrative becomes somewhat deeper with this added layer, with the plot unearthing yet another psychological development of a key character: Pinocchio isn’t just learning about the consequences of honesty, but Gepetto is learning about the consequences of responsibility.
Southwark Playhouse’s small theatre offers exactly the right sized space for this musical – here presented by the British Theatre Company. A varied and colourful set is moved aptly by the cast to allow for intimate renditions of headline songs (‘When You Wish Upon A Star’ and more) and all-singing, all-dancing production numbers such as ‘I’ve Got No Strings’.
Each and every cast member brings energy, dynamism and well trained vocals to their performance. ‘I’ve Got No Strings’ is a stand out ensemble number proffering both humour and awe with its range of vocals. This is a testament to Séimí Campbell and the British Theatre Company’s work in bringing underprivileged youth into the fold of the arts.
Well done all for an all-round entertaining, slick and heart wrenching performance. We’ll certainly be back for future productions by the British Theatre Company.
